What is Adaptation?
Now, a few of you (seeing as how you are on this site) may have been wondering exactly what adaptation is. Well, adaptation is a process where a group of living things become better suited to their environments. The process takes place over a very long time, usually many generations, and is on of the many phenomena of biology. It is more often called a process rather than a physical part of the body. Some examples of when an animal may have to adapt is when searching for food, beginning to live in a new area, vocalizations and physical adaptions. The traits gained by adaptation can be behavioral, structural, or physiological. Before Darwin(see links section), humans thought that adaptation was a relationship betweena n animal and it's habitat. Another example is the leafbug; it adapted to it's leafy environment and began to look like a leaf to protect itself from predators. In case you were wondering exactly what a leafbug looks like, I have included the following photos.
Now you can see exactly why it's called the leafbug. Just look at those lines and indents. It looks almost exactly like a real leaf. Let's continue on to the next section: Duck-billed Platypuses!
